Brit Milah for Brady

Brit milah or Bris, which means "covenant of circumcision," is a Jewish ritual performed on a baby boy eight days after he is born. Brady's Bris was held on March 31, 2011 which was actually his original due date.

The ceremony was performed by Dr. Alan Singer. 

Brady was  brought into the room by his loving Nana.

During the ceremony, the mother, father, and infant are encircled by relatives and friends who symbolically represent the covenant community into which the child is welcomed.  After the child is brought into the room, traditional words of welcome are recited.

Grandpa Henry was the Sandek: This is the person who holds the baby while the circumcision is being performed.  

Seven blessings were recited by everyone.

May Brady's life be filled with joy and happiness.

May Brady's life be filled with good friends and mutual respect.

May Brady's life be filled with the support and care of family.

May Brady's life be filled with health of body and spirit.

May Brady's life be filled with wisdom and insight.

May Brady's life be filled with laughter and humor.

May Brady's life be filled with warmth and love.

At the end of the ceremony was the baby naming.  Traditionally baby boy's names are not revealed until this time. For the 8 days leading up to the Bris the baby is not called by his name only baby, baby boy kron, or other generic baby name.  Brady is named after his great-grandfather Samuel Fischer.  We shared this letter with Brady telling him about his name.

Dear Brady,

You mom and I are so fortunate to be surrounded by wonderful, caring friends and a supportive, loving family, but we are truly blessed to have created a family of our own with your sister Chloe Sarai and now you Brady Samuel.

Today we welcome you to our lives and hearts by presenting you with your Hebrew name and performing the oldest rite of passage in Judaism, the Brit Milah or Bris. The Brit Milah is considered the sign of your entry into the Jewish religion and tradition. A tradition that is full of love, compassion, and an utmost focus on family. Traditions we hope will be dear to your heart as you grow from a boy to a man who has a family of his own.

Your Hebrew name is Shmuel, or in English, Samuel. Samuel was the name of your great grandfather, Samuel Fischer. He was a Holocaust survivor and one of the true Patriarchs of our family. He was a strong. He was loving. He was funny. He was charitable, and he was hard working. All characteristics we know you will possess as you get older. It is a great honor to be able to name you after him as you begin the journey as the next generation of our family.

It’s difficult to express in words just how happy we are to have you as part of our family now. We wish you to have a long, prosperous life, surrounded by as much love and support from friends and family as we have today.

1st Doctor's Appointment

Brady's first trip to his pediatrician went very well.  Like most babies he didn't like leaving daddy's arms to be poked and prodded at, but he checked out perfectly perfect.

He should be back up to his birth weight by his 2 week appointment.  On this day he weighed in at 7lbs 7oz and measured 19 3/4 inch.  I don't think it is possible for him to shrink, so they must have been generous at the hospital as 20 inches is his official birth length.  With us as parents, he'll probably always over exaggerate his height by 1/4 of an inch or so. =)

Welcome Home Greetings from Big Sis

Chloe welcomed her baby brother home from the hospital on Monday. 

 One of her favorite things to do is to cover him with the monkey blankie she gave to him in the hospital and say night-night.  (I think she thinks it is strange that he is always going night-night--I told her that babies sleep alot).

1 Day Old



Nursery Complete (just about)

Twas the night before delivery......and the nursery is finally finished (sort of).  There are a couple of blank spots on the wall, but we hung the sports banners and have the changing area all stocked.

We still need to change out these blinds--that was one of many things on my to do list that did not get done.  But thanks to Grandpa Ken and Daddy--our little boy does have lights and a ceiling fan.

I think we are going to do something with his name over the crib--so that will need to wait until we finally decide on a name....14 hours and counting left to decide. Yikes!

Not much over on this side but the closet and yes an Arizona State Banner.

We can't wait for the little man to see his room.

Baby Showers

Thanks to my wonderful friends and co-workers for throwing me some great showers.  Lots of diapers, gift cards, and baby boy clothes were much appreciated.   Here I am with my friend Shelly at the first shower thrown by my awesome friends Marissa and Bryar

Dress to Impress

Our little boy won't be wanting for clothes.  See all these bins--they are full of clothes from 3 months to 3T thanks our friends Aaron and Cassie.  Cassie is pregnant with a girl who will be born in May and since I'm pregnant with a boy--we decided to do a clothing swap.  They have a 3 year old named Max and these are all his clothes--wait..no there are 3 more bins full of clothes that I didn't take a picture of and a whole drawer of shoes and socks.  Needless to say, I don't think that we need to buy any clothes for 3 years.  All the clothes are in pretty great shape, even some with tags still on it--the only exception was a U of A shirt--that went right into the goodwill bag.

So a note to the Kohl's sale loving grandmas---I know it is hard to resist that adorable outfit that is 75% off--but we really don't have much more room.  So even if something is regularly $29.99 and you find it for 5 bucks--consider saving the 5 bucks for his college fund. 

Full Term

Well the doctor's appointments just went from boring and uneventful to exciting.  Today I am full term at 37 weeks meaning that if I go into labor they won't stop it--it will be go time. Before today I wouldn't have thought anything about "going early" but the doctor checked my cervix today and I am already 3-4 cm dialated and the doctor said my cervix is also very thin.  She then asked "are your bags packed?" to which I replied "NO"  I still have 7 more days of work and I really need all of them to get done what I need to at work.  But this baby will do what every other baby does--come on his time schedule, not mine.  So I am trying to get all the stuff done.  Next week, the yard is being cleaned on Tuesday, tile and carpet cleaned on Friday.  I still need to make an appointment to get my hair done--so hopefully I will check that off the list tomorrow. We also still need to put the infant car seat in the car (I also need to clean out and wash my car).  So tonight I am washing the cover since it has been sitting in the garage for months, and then we need to re-adjust it for a little infant.  I also need to pack Chloe an overnight bad, just in case, as well as wash the baby's clothes and pack our hospital bag.  There is so much still today and to know that it could happen any minute is freaking me out.  On the other hand I could stay at this level of dialation for weeks.   One thing is for sure---I'm not ready!!!

Mommy-9 months Pregnant

Dear Baby Boy, 

Here is your Mommy 9 months pregnant with you.  Only 3 weeks left until we get to welcome you to the world.  We can't wait to meet you.

3 Weeks to Go!

The weekly doctors appointments have begun and remember in the last post when I said that I hadn't had any leg cramps yet--well, that is no longer the case---Yay! another pregnancy symptom.  Other than the "normal" symptoms I'm experiencing everything is going well. My blood pressure is still good, baby's heart rate is good, I'm measuring 37 weeks and I am 36 weeks, so the baby is growing well and is packing on the pounds — at the rate of about an ounce a day. He could weigh about 6 pounds (like a crenshaw melon) and may be more than 18 1/2 inches long. He's shedding most of the downy covering of hair that covered his body as well as the vernix caseosa, the waxy substance that covered and protected his skin during his nine-month amniotic bath.
